Warwickshire stuggle in Inter County Racketball Finals

Played in front of packed galleries at the West Hants Club in Dorset over the weekend of 18th 19th February 4 teams – Dorset, Devon, Sussex and Warwickshire played out the first 2 rounds of the round robin finals weekend. Devon retained their title from Dorset in the last match and despite a lead at one stage Warwickshire lost to Sussex. 

The Warwickshire team consisted of Jake Graystone, Jack McEleveney Lee James, Andy Warmington and Rob Alger

Devon also won their first round tie comfortably, without dropping a match, infact the only player to drop a game was captain Matt Baker!

Round Two Saturday –

DORSET v WARWICKSHIRE
Dorset started brightly going 2 up with wins for Corben and Ypes, both 3-1. Theo Woodard sealed the win for Dorset as he comfortably beat Warwickshire captain Andy Warmington. Jake Grayston ensured it wasn’t a whitewash for Warwickshire, beating a tiring Clive Ewins . Chambers wrapped it up for Dorset winning 3-1.

DORSET V SUSSEX
Dorset supported by packed galleries won their round one tie with Sussex, with the bottom order strings giving them an unassailable 3-0 lead. Tim Vail got some valuable points for Sussex at 1st string, comfortably beating Clive Ewins. The match of the tie was between Andy Corben and Ben Hutton, Corben holding on to take it 12/10 in the 4th.

Holders Devon started brightly winning at 3 and 5 strings, and settled the win when 4th string Matt Baker dispatched Miles Jenkins 3-0. Mike Harris continued the good form for Devon, beating Brandon Hanley 3-0, and yet again it was only captain and 1 string Tim Vail who salvaged Sussex pride with an entertaining 3-1 win over James Snell

DAY 2

SUSSEX V WARWICKSHIRE
This tie decided 3rd and 4th place, with Sussex on 8 points over all and Warwickshire 7. Warwickshire went ahead 10 points to 9 when Rob Alger beat Gary Chissell 3-1. Ben Hutton pushed Sussex ahead 12 points to 11 as he held of a strong challenge from Lee James. Andy Warmington then won 3-0 for Warwickshire making it 14-12 to the West Midlands side. Sussex captain Tim Vail beat Jake Grayston 3-1. 15 all So all was decided on the last rubber between Brandon Hanley and Jack McCLevenny, which Hanley won 3-0 So 18 points overall to Sussex with a bonus of 5 for winning the tie made the finishing points for the weekend Sussex 23 (3rd)Warwickshire 15 (4th)

DEVON V DORSET
The outcome of this tie decided the Champions, with Devon starting 3 points ahead of Dorset over all. Dorset soon levelled things to 38 points each with Andy Corben totally outplaying Dave Palmer. Devon inched ahead as Matt Baker beat Jamie Broomfield 3-1 – 41pts to 39. Devon got more points on the board as 1st string James Snell easily overcame Clive Ewins 3-0.Devon 44 Dorset 39. Meanwhile an epic encounter was unfolding in the 4th string tussle between Christian Turner and Theo Woodward, Dorset won 3-0 after 94 minutes interrupted by a change of court due to a drinks spillage on the initial court. 42 points Dorset – 44 Devon. So the outcome rested on the 2nd string match between Mike Harris and Neil Chambers which Harris won 3-0 in a tough match to hand Devon the title – 3-2 in the match and 52 42 overall
