Warwickshire Success at the North West Masters

This weekend saw the last Masters regional event of the season before the Biritish Nationals in February. These two events being the final chance for players to get the results they need to force their way into contention for the England teams for the yearly Home Internationals. Warwickshire has a number of players who are in with a chance of selection and their positions were strengthened with some strong performances at the Grove Park event.

Marcus Hayes (Sutton Coldfield) toppled the number 1 & 2 seeds on his way to winning the Men’s O35 event.

Quarter Final – Beat Phil Jones (HPH) (9/12) 11-4, 11-3, 11-6

Semi Final – Beat Paul Stroud (Lec) (2) 11-5, 11-6, 8-11, 12-10

Final – Beat Phil Nightingale (SRY) (1) 11-3, 11-4, 11-3

Natalie Townsend (Kenilworth) beat the top seed in the Ladies 035’s to claim her first regional title.

Pool – Beat Frances Taylor 11-3, 11-6, 11-5

Rachel Woolford (Solihull Arden) taking yet another win in the Ladies O50’s.

Pool – Beat Shelly Walsh 15-10, 12-15, 15-5, 15-17, 15-11

Andrew Murray (Sutton Coldfield) defeating the number 2 seed to reach the final of the Men’s O50’s, narrowly losing 3-1.

Semi Final – Beat Cliff Martindale (SRY) (2) 11-6 5-2 rtd

Final – Lost to Yawar Abbas (DCL) (1) 11-8, 6-11, 5-11, 7-11

And a special mention to Shropshire’s Michael Harris (Edgbastion Priory) who picked up an impressive 4th victory of the season.
